An anniversary...
Of 19th Century Punking.
Six articles appeared in the New York Sun newspaper on this day in 1835. For your reference, in 1835 we hadn't had a world war, Edgar Allan Poe was writing stuff, and Mark Twain had just been born. Oh yeah, there was this presidential assassination attempt on Andrew Jackson.
So the six articles in question touted astronomical discoveries of life on the moon. They were thinly veiled satire, but still readers were completely fooled.
We're guessing their decedents are watching FOX News to this day.
Of course, now we fake stuff like this all the time. The WMDs in Iraq for example.
