So long Art...

We lost an original artist this weekend.  Art Clokey died at age 88.

If you don't know Art, you probably know his art, a little guy named Gumby.

Stop motion clay animation was Clokey's game, a patient pursuit in which he excelled.  Gumby was a character property created before the megacorps that manage creation and marketing were ensconced in managing that process. That much is evident by the surreal, almost hallucinogenic manner in which most of the stories were told. Crazy threatening muttering blocks of clay with gnashing teeth or waving tentacles would slide along the ground, chasing Gumby through crazy worlds of twisting scenery and... well you get the idea. Clokey admittedly took LSD "one time under medical supervision" but the comparisons are undeniable.

Of course, it's not all about the drugs.  The stories were entertaining, inspiring, charming, and the characters had real personalities.

An original is gone. We'll not see his like again.

Apparently all the episodes area available on YouTube.  Enjoy.
