Joker in the bunch...

Nice to see Ledger win the posthumous Golden Globe award, which puts him that much close to the posthumous Oscar. The buzz has been that a "comic book" movie Oscar for something more substantial than "sound editing" will finally put them on the map as serious content for adults. Watchmen would be step 2, providing it releases two weeks later.

But what does that really mean for the average fan?

Nothing really.  There will be bad movies, silly comic movies, impenetrable indy movies, and large studio flops in our future to be sure.  Maybe Marvel will ramp up and get their Avengers movie done. Someday DC/Warner may pull their heads out of their asses and do a real Justice League film. Studios are starting to stay closer to the source material, trusting what fans have loved and not trying to put the studio stink into the property.  But not always.

A real test of all this will be the upcoming Fables TV show. If you haven't tried Fables, you're missing out.  And it's totally capable of being shot, as-is, for a television series. It's also totally capable of being fucked-up by the studio.  The fact that the brilliant writer of the series is not on staff for the show bodes ill, but maybe they'll trust the source.

We're not holding our breath.
